About the Rolex Submariner
The Submariner was presented in 1953 as the first wristwatch guaranteed waterproof to 100 metres, and it has defined what a diving watch looks like ever since. Modern versions are waterproof to 300 metres.
The bezel turns one way only, so that if it is knocked during a dive it can only ever understate the time elapsed, never overstate it. That single decision is why the design has barely changed in seventy years.
What to look for in a pre-owned Submariner
Date or no date
The Submariner is made with and without a date. The no-date version has the cleaner dial and no Cyclops lens, and has a following of its own.
Bezel
Modern bezels use a Cerachrom insert that will not fade. Earlier aluminium inserts do fade, and on vintage watches that fading is often considered part of the appeal.
Metal
Oystersteel, yellow Rolesor and solid gold. The steel versions are by far the most common second hand.
Size
The case moved to 41 mm in 2020 with slimmer lugs. Earlier 40 mm examples wear thicker through the lugs than the number suggests.
