About the Rolex GMT-Master II
The original GMT-Master was developed in the 1950s with Pan American World Airways, for pilots crossing time zones on the new intercontinental routes. The GMT-Master II followed in 1982 and added an independently adjustable hour hand, so the wearer can change local time without disturbing the reference time.
The two-colour bezels have picked up names of their own along the way, and those nicknames now drive more of the second-hand conversation than the reference numbers do.
What to look for in a pre-owned GMT-Master II
Bezel
Modern bezel inserts are Cerachrom, a ceramic that will not fade in sunlight. Producing two colours in a single ceramic insert is difficult, which is part of why those versions are so sought after.
Bracelet
Oyster or Jubilee. The same watch feels sportier on an Oyster and dressier on a Jubilee, and it is worth trying both.
Metal
Oystersteel, Rolesor in yellow or Everose gold, white gold and solid gold. The precious metal versions are far less common than the steel ones.
Crown position
On some recent references the crown and date sit on the left of the case. It is an unusual configuration and it either appeals immediately or it does not.
