About the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

The Cosmograph Daytona is Rolex's chronograph, introduced in 1963 and named after the Florida speedway. It was built to let a driver read average speed off the tachymetric bezel, and it spent its first two decades as an unloved tool watch before becoming the most sought-after watch Rolex makes.

That reversal is why the Daytona behaves unlike the rest of the catalogue on the second-hand market. Demand for some configurations runs well ahead of supply, and it is the one Rolex family where the pre-owned market sets the conversation rather than following it.

What to look for in a pre-owned Cosmograph Daytona

Bezel

Modern steel Daytonas carry a black Cerachrom bezel, which will not fade or scratch in normal wear. Earlier steel models use an engraved metal bezel, and gold models are often fitted with a metal or diamond-set bezel instead.

Metal and bracelet

The Daytona is made in Oystersteel, in Rolesor, and in solid gold and platinum. Gold models are frequently fitted with Oysterflex, Rolex's elastomer bracelet over a flexible metal blade, which wears very differently from an Oyster.

Dial

Panda and reverse-panda dials, where the sub-dials contrast with the main dial, are the configurations collectors ask for first. Meteorite and mother-of-pearl dials appear on precious metal models.
