About the Rolex Day-Date
The Day-Date arrived in 1956 as the first wristwatch to show the date and the day of the week spelt out in full. Seventy years later it is still the only Rolex that does, and still made only in gold or platinum.
It is worn on the President bracelet, designed for it and named for the heads of state who wore the watch. Nothing else in the catalogue announces itself in quite the same way, which is why it is either exactly the right watch or entirely the wrong one.
What to look for in a pre-owned Day-Date
Metal
Yellow, white and Everose gold, and platinum. Platinum is the rarest and is usually paired with an ice-blue dial, a combination reserved for that metal.
Size
The Day-Date is made in 36 mm and 40 mm. The 36 mm is the original proportion and reads as a dress watch; the 40 mm has a more contemporary presence.
Dial
This is where a Day-Date is really chosen. Stone dials, wood dials, pave and gem-set dials all appear across the decades, and many are long discontinued, so the pre-owned market is the only place to find them.
Language
The day disc is available in a long list of languages. It is a detail worth checking, and one that can be changed by a Rolex Service Centre.
Day-Date prices in Malta
Because the Day-Date is made only in precious metal, the metal itself sets the floor and the dial sets the rest. Two watches of the same reference and year can differ substantially on the strength of the dial alone. Every watch in this selection is priced, so you can compare without having to ask.
